An aerial view of Eastham locks, with two ships on the quayside at Queen Elizabeth II docks

Description

Eastham Locks allow ships to pass from the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal and is home to the largest lock in the UK. Eastham is made up of 3 locks of which 2 remain operational. In addition to the locks there are a large number of vessels based at Eastham.

Queen Elizabeth II Dock sits adjacent to Eastham Locks and became operational in the 1950’s. The dock allowed tankers which were too large for the ship canal to berth and unload their cargo. Today most tankers unload liquid cargo such as petroleum, oil and chemicals. The original operations tower remains on the site and offers superb views of the Mersey estuary from Runcorn to Liverpool.

Location

Eastham Locks/Queen Elizabeth II Dock is situated on the Wirral, sitting at the junction where the Manchester Ship Canal meets the River Mersey. Both junction 5 of the M53 and Eastham Rake Railway Station are 2 miles from the locks. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is approximately 30 miles away.
